BedWars Custom Server Bots: Update 3

We’ve made additional changes and improvements to Bots in BedWars Custom Servers based on feedback left on the feedback form (use ‘Bot Opponents’), and the in-game survey sent to players who tried Update 2.

Bots remain only available in custom servers, and for select matches for brand-new BedWars players. Bots are not present in regular BedWars lobbies.

Highlights

  • Fairer fights: bots now take full knockback, need a moment to switch items, miss plenty of clutches and no longer snap their head towards you before hitting

  • They fight like players: strafing, moving through their hits, backing off from fights they're losing, and trying to knock you into the void

  • A real early game: bots buy wool, head straight for diamonds, buy the Forge upgrade and get moving, instead of camping their base

  • Smarter shopping: Regeneration first, no wasted upgrades once their bed is gone, and saving up for a diamond sword

  • Human movement: sprinting everywhere, sprint-jumping, jumping small gaps, and looking around the way you would with a mouse

  • Better teammates: bots split up roles in Duos and Squads, rush in pairs and hand over resources

  • Players vs Bots: a new Bot Teams setting lets you put your team up against a team of bots

In addition to changes made based on player feedback, many improvements came from comparing bot matches with human matches across various skill levels. We’ve identified a number of remaining gaps that will be addressed in future updates.

Players vs Bots

  • Added a Bot Teams setting to the Bots (Advanced) category, under Bots Per Team

  • Leave it on All to add bots to every team

  • Pick a number to give bots that many teams of their own. Players are grouped together onto their own teams without bot teammates, so you can have 4 players against 4 bots in Squads

  • Parties stay together, and players placed on a team with Set Roles stay on it

Fair Fights

  • Bots now take full knockback, including from arrows and fireballs, instead of holding their ground after being hit

  • Bots now need a moment after switching items before they can attack, place a block, drink or eat, just like players

  • Bots no longer clutch every fall. Saving themselves is now much harder for Easy and Normal bots, and even Hard bots miss plenty of clutches

  • Bots no longer attack you while they're falling and trying to clutch

  • Bots no longer snap their head towards you right before hitting you. They track you with a bit of wobble, and hits line up the way they do for players

  • Bots now reach a little less far against a moving target, so their hits land from the distance you'd expect on your screen

  • Bots no longer eat golden apples in the middle of a fight. They back off first, like players do

  • Drinking potions and eating golden apples now takes as long as it does for players, and bots can't attack while doing it

  • Bots' arrows are now less accurate, especially over longer distances, and bots visibly draw their bow before shooting

Fighting Like a Player

  • Bots now strafe from side to side during fights instead of walking straight at you

  • Bots no longer stop dead to hit you. They keep moving, sprint into their hits and ease off after landing one

  • Bots now change their distance during a fight: pushing in after landing a hit, backing off after taking one

  • Bots now try to knock you towards the void when you're fighting near an edge, and are better at not getting knocked off themselves

  • Bots now break off fights they're losing and back away to cover nearby, instead of fighting to the death. They may place a block or two between you and them on the way

  • Bots now click at a more human pace, with an uneven rhythm

Early Game

  • Bots now open the game like players: buy a stack of wool, head straight for the diamond generator, buy the Forge upgrade, and only then pick up a sword

  • Bots no longer camp around their bed in the first minute. They defend after their first diamond run instead

  • Some bots now go straight from the diamond generator to rush an enemy bed

  • Fewer bots head for mid at the start of the game

  • In Duos and Squads, bots now leave their base sooner, and much sooner in Duos

  • After respawning, bots now take a moment, buy what they need, and head back out instead of hanging around their base

  • Bots that run out of blocks halfway across a bridge now walk back to their island instead of jumping into the void

Shopping

  • Bots now buy Regeneration as their first team upgrade, like most players

  • Bots no longer buy Faster Respawn, Spawn Protection or the Enemy Alarm once their bed is gone, and stop buying defence blocks

  • Normal and Hard bots now often skip the iron sword and save up for a diamond sword, and Normal bots now go for emeralds too

  • Bots buy shears much less often

  • Easy bots now gear up at a more relaxed pace, like new players

  • Bots now buy items one at a time instead of their whole loadout at once

Breaking Into Beds

  • Bots can now dig through layered bed defences, working from the outside in, instead of standing on top of them

  • Bots now get the right tool for the job: shears for wool, an axe for wood, a pickaxe for stone, deepslate and obsidian. Easy bots do this too

  • Bots no longer get stopped by a defender quickly placing blocks back over their bed. They step into the gap they dug and break the bed from there

  • Bots no longer lose their mining progress when you replace one of the blocks they were digging through

  • Bots no longer hit a covered bed with their sword when they have no tool for it

  • If a bed would take far too long to break (like obsidian without a pickaxe), bots go for another objective instead of waiting it out

  • Bots now show block cracks while mining, like players

Rushing

  • Hard bots with the Rusher play style now rush beds much more often and much earlier, usually within the first minute

  • A Hard rusher now buys what it needs at home and then commits to the rush, instead of wandering off to collect resources first

  • If a fight or retreat interrupts a Hard rusher's rush, it goes back for the same bed

Bed Defense

  • Bots now build defenses the way players do: a hard block against the bed, with wool on the outside

  • Bot defenses no longer have pointless corner blocks

  • On custom servers with a free or cheap shop, bots now build a full defense with the best blocks instead of a single obsidian block

Saving Themselves

  • Bots no longer start drinking a potion or eating a golden apple while falling, and stop if they had just started. Clutching now always comes first

  • Some Normal and Hard bots now carry an ender pearl, and throw it back onto an island when they're knocked off too far to clutch

  • Hard bots may also throw their ender pearl to escape a fight they can't win

Getting Unstuck

  • Bots trapped in a box now dig or build their way out, using the best tool they have

  • Bots no longer stand still for a long time and then die when they're boxed in with blocks they can break

  • Bots without blocks or a bed now move around their island instead of standing still

  • Bots can now get past an enemy wall placed on their bridge, breaking through it or climbing over it

  • Bots now avoid or break enemy springs, so a spring placed next to their spawn no longer launches them into the void

Respawn Protection

  • A bot that just respawned no longer walks up to you and waits for its protection to run out before hitting you. It uses the time to shop, defend or collect instead

  • If you're attacking a bot's bed while it's protected, it will still fight back straight away

Movement

  • Bots now sprint everywhere, including to the shop and around their island

  • Bots now sprint-jump across open ground and along finished bridges, and chain their jumps like players

  • Bots now jump over small gaps instead of placing a block to cross them

  • Bots now build straight bridges instead of diagonal staircases

  • Hard bots now miss the occasional jump-bridge click, like players do

Looking More Human

  • Bots now look slightly down at the ground while walking, instead of staring straight at the horizon

  • Bots now turn their head the way you'd move a mouse, holding their view still between turns and looking around every now and then

  • Bots now keep their head still while standing around, instead of slowly drifting their view

  • Bots now look down at the edge while bridging, instead of nodding their head up and down on every block, and look at a more natural angle while placing blocks

Duos & Squads

  • In Duos, neither bot is stuck as a permanent defender any more. Both roam, and a bot now often follows its partner on a rush

  • In Squads, one bot now takes charge of defending the bed while the others play the map

  • In Squads, bots now rush in pairs instead of the whole team at once, and only one teammate jumps in to help in a fight

  • Bot teammates now hand over resources when a teammate is short for their next purchase

  • Easy and Normal bots no longer always rush straight home the moment their bed alarm goes off

  • In Duos and Squads, bot teammates now take turns on the home generator instead of all standing on it and splitting the same drops

  • In Squads, bots now use both home generators on their island instead of crowding the closest one

  • Human teammates always get priority on the generator

Late Game

  • When no beds are left, bots now commit to hunting down the last enemies instead of standing off on a bridge until the timer runs out

  • Bots now avoid diamond and emerald generators where enemies are already standing
